How to book accommodation for a multi-city rail holiday
A Benelux rail itinerary can work well from one or two hotel bases. Rather than switching hotels every day, consider spending two to four nights in a city with good rail connections. Compare a city-centre location with one close to the main train station. The shortest walk may not be the best overall choice if you also want restaurants, sights and evening activities nearby.
Compare the total room cost
Check local taxes, breakfast, room occupancy and whether payment is taken immediately or at the property. Review cancellation terms before booking, particularly if your train dates are not yet fixed.
Look at actual walking and transfer times
Historic city centres sometimes have cobbled streets, canals and pedestrian areas. A nearby station on a map can still require a longer walk with luggage. Confirm the specific station at which your train arrives and check how you will reach the hotel.
Reserve around your rail travel days
A rail-pass travel day applies to eligible trains, not to hotels or local accommodation. If you are planning early departures or late arrivals, check reception hours and luggage storage. For longer multi-country trips, allow sufficient time for transfers and potential delays.
Consider alternatives to a city-centre hotel
Serviced apartments, guest houses and accommodation in smaller railway towns may suit families or longer stays. Decide whether any money saved outweighs extra daily transport and journey time.
