Discover Rotterdam

Rotterdam looks decisively different from the traditional canal cities: wartime reconstruction and modern design shaped a skyline of inventive buildings, wide boulevards and busy waterfronts.

Top sights and places worth exploring

Markthal

Look up at the striking interior artwork before exploring the food stands.

Cube Houses

See Piet Blom’s tilted residential architecture near Blaak station.

Erasmus Bridge

Walk the riverfront for impressive views of the bridge and the Nieuwe Maas.

Museumpark

Explore the cultural cluster and check exhibitions at the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen.

A practical sightseeing plan

Start around Rotterdam Centraal, continue to the Markthal and Cube Houses, and save the riverfront for afternoon light.

Group the Markthal and Cube Houses together, then follow the riverfront towards the Erasmus Bridge. A museum visit or harbour excursion needs its own block of time; the modern city covers more ground than a compact medieval centre.

Getting to Rotterdam by rail

Rotterdam Centraal is a major stop for Dutch intercity and cross-border services, with frequent connections towards Delft, The Hague and Antwerp.

Arrival point: Rotterdam Centraal.

Check the exact train operator, any reservation requirement and the service's pass eligibility before you travel. The Benelux Pass does not cover travel beyond the participating network solely because a train begins or ends in the Benelux.

Rotterdam Centraal and Rotterdam Blaak serve different parts of the city. Check which station suits your visit and whether a fast service via Schiphol needs a supplement. RET metro journeys, including the route towards Hoek van Holland, are not covered by a Benelux rail pass.

Practical tips and timing

Waterfront areas can be windy; pack an extra layer even on sunny days.

Check attraction opening arrangements, accessible entrances and the return journey for your actual travel date. Keep outdoor plans flexible when the weather changes, and allow a margin between a train arrival and any timed admission.
