Which Benelux trains can you use?
Passes work only on participating rail companies and train types. In broad terms, many SNCB/NMBS services in Belgium, NS and other participating Dutch rail services, and CFL trains in Luxembourg are covered, but details depend on the specific train. Use the issuer’s participating-railway list together with the Rail Planner app and the operator’s current journey information. A train appearing in a timetable is not, by itself, proof that this particular pass is valid.
Belgian InterCity and local services
Conventional Belgian domestic services generally allow passholders to board without buying a seat reservation. They are a useful way to visit Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges, Leuven, Namur and other destinations. Trams, local buses and city metros are ordinarily separate from the rail pass. For train travel to or from Brussels Airport-Zaventem, passholders generally need a separate Brussels Airport supplement (Diabolo). Check the current exceptions and price before travelling; the pass alone should not be treated as the airport access ticket.
Dutch Intercity and Sprinter trains
The national Dutch network connects Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Haarlem, Leiden, Delft and a wealth of smaller destinations. Most ordinary domestic services do not offer or require seat reservations. Some premium services or international legs can have different supplement or reservation conditions, so check the actual train, not just the route.
Brussels–Amsterdam: compare the train type
Check this service’s Benelux eligibility before buying
The issuer’s October 2026 participating-railway table lists Eurocity Direct differently in its Belgian and Dutch sections. Do not take a reservation-free service to mean this regional pass is automatically valid for every cross-border leg. Confirm your exact Benelux pass, train and journey with the issuer or railway; use a separate ticket if coverage cannot be confirmed.
This cross-border route may be offered by different international service types, including Eurocity Direct and Eurostar. They do not share identical passholder booking conditions. Eurocity Direct typically connects Brussels with Rotterdam, Schiphol and Amsterdam Zuid on its usual route, while Eurostar runs premium services with specific passholder seat-reservation or pass-fare requirements. Engineering works can change the Amsterdam terminus and stopping pattern.
Travellers planning an Amsterdam Centraal arrival should pay special attention to the distinction between Amsterdam Zuid, Amsterdam Centraal and Schiphol Airport . These are different stations, and the cheapest or easiest connection depends on your accommodation.
Eurostar: separate reservation or pass fare
A Benelux Pass can be used on selected continental Brussels–Amsterdam Eurostar journeys under the issuer’s conditions, with a compulsory paid passholder reservation and limited availability. That exception is not a ticket to London or Paris. Your pass must cover both countries on the eligible journey, and the home-country restriction still applies to Benelux residents. Check the precise train and passholder conditions before paying.
Night trains and European Sleeper
Sleeping accommodation usually requires a reservation and sometimes other charges. In particular, official pass conditions exclude European Sleeper from the Benelux Pass , even though other passes may have different arrangements. Do not rely on a journey merely appearing on an international rail map as proof of pass eligibility.
Luxembourg trains
Local CFL trains are generally easy to use. Domestic second-class public transport is free, making the pass unnecessary on those journeys. First-class travel and international crossings are not simply free. Stations such as Luxembourg Gare and Ettelbruck are useful for connecting to local buses reaching destinations not served directly by passenger trains.
Four things to check before each travel day
- Is the specific train and operating company in the pass network?
- Does it require a compulsory reservation or passholder fare?
- Does any segment cross outside Belgium, the Netherlands or Luxembourg?
- Do you need another ticket for an airport fee, city metro, tram, bus or ferry?
