BEYOND THE BENELUX PASS

Travel to and from the Benelux by ferry or train

A Benelux rail pass is designed for eligible trains within Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Your journey may also involve a ferry crossing, separate train ticket or overnight stay.

UK & European ferry crossings

Look for ferry journeys connecting Britain, Ireland and continental Europe. Compare crossings by departure port, arrival port, journey time and whether you are travelling on foot or with a vehicle. A ferry can be useful when combining a coastal holiday with Benelux rail travel.

UK & European city-to-city rail tickets

Separate point-to-point rail tickets can be practical when travelling in Britain or continuing beyond the Benelux pass area. Compare route options, permitted departure times, required reservations, luggage and exchange rules before booking.

Accommodation along the way

Arrange a hotel near a major station, choose a coastal stopover or stay longer in one of the Benelux cities. Base changes around convenient connections rather than moving luggage to a new hotel every day.

When should you use the Benelux pass instead of a separate ticket?

Use the Benelux pass for eligible journeys covered by its region and conditions. If you are travelling only between two cities, buying an ordinary ticket can be better value. For journeys that leave the Benelux area, the pass does not automatically cover the entire trip. Check exactly where your pass ceases to be valid and whether separate reservations or supplements are needed.

Plan a ferry connection carefully

Ferry ports are not always in city centres. If your itinerary includes a sailing, check the rail or bus connection to the terminal, passenger check-in times and the availability of foot-passenger boarding. Weather, sailing season, vehicle needs and cabin choices can all affect the best route. FerryEU provides a starting point for comparing crossings .

Compare point-to-point trains on longer journeys

Buying rail tickets for travel in the UK or other European countries may be preferable to purchasing another regional pass, especially when the date and time are fixed. Great Britain Rail can be used to investigate available routes and tickets ; verify international availability for the exact cities before relying on a particular connection.

Connecting Britain and mainland Europe

Journeys between Great Britain and the Benelux countries may involve international trains, ferries or a combination of transport. Consider journey times, departure terminals and onward train stations together. A cheaper crossing is not always cheaper overall once you add transfers and overnight accommodation.

Simple pre-departure checklist

  • Confirm whether each rail journey is covered by the pass or needs a separate ticket.
  • Check reservation rules for international and premium trains.
  • Allow adequate time to reach a ferry port from the railway station.
  • Review cancellation policies for ferries, trains and accommodation separately.
  • Plan overnight stays around sensible connection times rather than minimum transfers.
