Why travel around Luxembourg by rail?
The Grand Duchy has a compact rail network centred on Luxembourg City, making it well suited to exploratory days combined with Belgium or the Netherlands. Beyond the capital’s historic fortifications, trains reach the north of the country, industrial heritage areas in the south and stations that connect by bus to castles and walking trails.
Luxembourg rewards slow exploration, but the value calculation is different here: ordinary domestic second-class trains, buses and trams are already free. Judge a Benelux pass mainly against eligible paid journeys elsewhere and any qualifying cross-border travel, not against a local ticket cost that does not exist.
Train network and important stations
CFL operates Luxembourg’s main railway network. Luxembourg Gare is the principal interchange, with rail lines towards the north, south and Belgium. Crucially, domestic second-class trains and ordinary public buses and trams are free in Luxembourg, so a pass may offer little added value for travel contained wholly within the country. First-class rail travel and journeys crossing the border follow different rules.
Before you travel: Use the free local buses when making the final connection to places such as Vianden or Echternach, which are not directly served by rail. An international train crossing the border is not the same as a free domestic second-class journey.
Top experiences to build into your itinerary
- Walk the Chemin de la Corniche above the old town of Luxembourg City
- Take the train north to Clervaux for historic streets and countryside
- Explore Esch-sur-Alzette and the Belval industrial heritage district
- Travel by train and bus to Vianden’s hilltop castle
Suggested rail route across Luxembourg
Luxembourg City → Esch-sur-Alzette → Ettelbruck → Diekirch → Clervaux → Vianden (bus)
Use the route as inspiration, not as a through-train timetable. Some segments need a connection and extra local transport. Check the operator and whether your chosen service is pass-valid, then allow time to explore each stop rather than trying to complete everything in one day.

Common planning questions
Are all trains included in the Benelux Pass?
No. Covered operators and train types vary. Most ordinary national railway services are included, but some international services need reservations and some services may be excluded. Verify the specific train in the official Rail Planner app.
Is a rail pass always better value?
No. Short rides, advance-purchase train tickets, a small number of rail days and the free public transport in Luxembourg can make individual tickets cheaper.
Can I use the pass in my country of residence?
A Benelux resident generally cannot use the Benelux One Country Pass for domestic travel in their own country of residence. See the eligibility explanation .
