Discover Luxembourg City

Luxembourg City rises above deep green valleys, a dramatic setting that makes its old quarters, bridges and former fortifications unlike those of the flatter Benelux capitals.

Free local transport: no pass day needed

Ordinary domestic second-class trains, public buses and trams in Luxembourg are free to residents and visitors. Do not activate a Benelux pass day solely for these journeys. First-class rail and the paid part of an international trip need appropriate validity. Check Luxembourg’s official transport guidance .

Top sights and places worth exploring

Chemin de la Corniche

Follow the celebrated elevated promenade for sweeping views over the Alzette valley.

Grund

Explore the atmospheric lower town beside the river.

Bock Casemates

Check tours of the historic defensive tunnels and fortifications.

Grand Ducal Palace

View the palace from the street and check seasonal tour schedules.

A practical sightseeing plan

Begin in the Ville Haute, descend towards the Grund and return via lifts or paths after exploring the valley.

Separate the upper town and lower valleys into manageable walks. The dramatic changes of level make the city memorable, but it is worth planning lifts or public transport instead of assuming every route is flat.

Getting to Luxembourg City by rail

Luxembourg Gare is the national hub. Domestic second-class trains, buses and trams are free; cross-border travel follows separate ticket or pass rules.

Arrival point: Luxembourg Gare.

Check the exact train operator, any reservation requirement and the service's pass eligibility before you travel. The Benelux Pass does not cover travel beyond the participating network solely because a train begins or ends in the Benelux.

Luxembourg Gare is south of the historic upper town. Ordinary public buses and trams, as well as domestic second-class trains, are free; choose the connection that suits your hotel rather than using a rail-pass day for city travel.

Practical tips and timing

The city has significant elevation changes despite short map distances; public lifts can help.

Check attraction opening arrangements, accessible entrances and the return journey for your actual travel date. Keep outdoor plans flexible when the weather changes, and allow a margin between a train arrival and any timed admission.
